Biography

Matthew Smith was born and raised in Florida. He is a double Gator, earning both a bachelor’s degree in engineering (with honors) and law degree from the University of Florida.

Upon graduating law school, Matt entered active-duty service as a judge advocate (JAG) in the United States Marine Corps. During approximately ten years on active-duty, Matthew completed assignments in Okinawa, Japan, southern California, and at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, VA. During this time, Matt gained significant litigation experience as a criminal defense attorney where he represented numerous military clients facing serious allegations for complex felonies like manslaughter, sexual assault, domestic abuse, assault, and grand larceny. Matt left active-duty service in 2017 but continues to serve as a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves.

Prior to joining Morgan & Morgan, Matt gained civil litigation experience working for a boutique law firm in the Tampa Bay area, where he focused primarily on catastrophic personal injury and insurance bad faith cases in state and federal courts. In 2021 and 2022, Matt received peer recognition as a Best-Lawyer - Personal Injury Litigation (Plaintiffs).

Matt joined Morgan & Morgan so that he could continue to put his litigation skills to work for people who have been injured.
