Megan Anne Swain: Attorney with Shipley & Swain PLLC

Biography

Megan is a “reformed Yankee,” born and raised in the Thumb of Michigan. Megan moved to Tennessee in 2005 to attend Freed-Hardeman University and decided Southern-living was for her! Megan graduated summa cum laude in 2009 with a degree in secondary education and history. Megan decided to continue her education at the University of Tennessee College of Law the same year, where she met Luke.

Megan took an unconventional path through law school. In January 2011, Megan went to Arusha, Tanzania for a six-month internship with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she worked in the Appeals and Legal Advisory division for the Office of the Prosecutor. Upon completion of her internship, she was asked to stay for the rest of 2011 to continue her work.

Upon her return in January 2012, she clerked for Judge Bill Swann, former Knox County Fourth Circuit Court Judge. She graduated magna cum laude in December of 2012, and began working for local attorney Robert L. Jolley, Jr. As an associate attorney, Megan represented clients in criminal defense and family law matters, in trial court and on appeal, including 2 cases before the Tennessee Supreme Court.

Life has gotten much more interesting since Megan became a mother. Owen joined the family in late 2017, and Megan spent some time focusing on him. Owen became the “Junior Associate” when the firm opened in the summer of 2018.

In the few months since the firm opened, Megan has done freelance legal writing for federal criminal cases, as well as argued before the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Megan and Luke also prosecuted a three-day jury trial. When asked about the new adventure, Megan has explained, “Life has been busy, but we’re having a blast!”
