Biography

Coleman Ellis is a partner at the firm of Cook Ellis LLC, where he focuses his work in the areas of debtor and creditor rights, bankruptcy, and general business and real estate transactions. He has over 13 years of experience in these fields and is licensed to practice in Missouri, Kansas and Utah. Coleman assists individuals, non-profits and businesses to overcome financial challenges and get back on their feet; or to liquidate and close their doors in an organized and ethical manner. Much of his work involves representing debtors and creditors in cases under Chapter 7, Chapter 11, Chapter 12 and Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code. His business clients include franchisees, hotel owners, manufacturing concerns, food service providers, health-care companies, farmers, religious-based organizations, and real-estate holding companies. Coleman is board certified in the area of consumer bankruptcy by the American Board of Certification. To be certified, he satisfied the following requirements: full time practice of law for at least five years; good standing in the bars of all states where a license to practice law is held; devoted at least 30% of practice time and at least 400 hours to bankruptcy-related matters in the last three years; documented involvement in consumer bankruptcy by providing information on cases practiced; demonstrated commitment to continuing legal education by earning at least 60 hours of bankruptcy education in the past three years; passed an extensive, day-long written examination covering consumer bankruptcy issues. Coleman is a member of The Missouri Bar, the Kansas Bar Association, the Utah Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute. He received a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, an MBA from the Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Utah.
