Mrs. Laura Karns Fischer

Laura Fischer earned her undergraduate degree in Journalism and Business with a minor in Economics and Public Relations from Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1994, Laura moved to Alabama to take an editorial position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received her law degree in 1999 from the University of Alabama School of Law in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

While attending law school, Laura served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Law & Psychology Review. She was the research and editorial assistant to Professor William Andreen who published widely in the area of environmental and water pollution law. Laura was a member of Law School's Trial Advocacy Team and won an award for her Oral Advocacy skills in Moot Court. She was a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society and worked as an intern at an insurance defense firm, a plaintiff's practice, at the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and with a copyright and intellectual property practitioner.

After law school, Laura joined the firm of Phelps, Jenkins, Gibson & Fowler, LLC in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her practice there focused on litigation, primarily in the area of medical malpractice defense wherein she represented hospitals, nursing homes and medical practitioners. Laura also worked on cases involving employment law, contract disputes, and insurance defense. Laura's work now is focused primarily on personal injury and medical malpractice matters.

Laura is a member of the American Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar. She is also admitted to the United States District Court for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Alabama, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.
