Biography

With over a decade of litigation experience in state and local government, Marissa knows the importance of zealous advocacy at both the trial and appellate levels. Marissa began her career as a Wake County Assistant District Attorney. She prosecuted hundreds of cases in both district and superior court, and has tried numerous cases in front of juries ranging from homicide, aggravated assault, and kidnapping to drug and firearm offenses. Marissa also served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Medicaid Investigations Division at the NC Department of Justice, where she was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Western District of North Carolina and assisted in the prosecution of complex Medicaid fraud cases involving multiple agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Office of the Inspector General, and Department of Health and Human Services.

In addition to her extensive trial experience, Marissa is also a formidable appellate advocate. As a Special Deputy Attorney General in the Appellate and Post-Conviction Section at the NC Department of Justice, she prepared the State’s briefs in criminal appeals. She presented numerous oral arguments in both the NC Supreme Court and the NC Court of Appeals. Marissa also represented the State of North Carolina in superior courts across the state in evidentiary hearings in complex capital post-conviction litigation. Additionally, she prepared the State’s responses to federal habeas petitions in federal district courts across the state.

Prior to joining Cranfill Sumner, Marissa also served as a Deputy County Attorney at the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, where she defended the Sheriff and his employees in 42 U.S.C. 1983 litigation. Marissa’s unique combination of trial and appellate experience allows her to bring a thoughtful, thorough, and comprehensive approach to her clients’ cases.

Marissa received her law degree from Campbell University in 2013. Before law school, she earned her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Communication Studies and Spanish from UNC Wilmington. In her free time, she enjoys running and spending time at the beach.
