Biography

Norman Shaw graduated from City College of New York School of Business and Civic Administration in 1953, and (after service in the United States Army), received his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1958. He is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. His practice areas include estate planning, estate and gift tax and generation-skipping tax, estate administration, business succession planning, estate litigation, charitable organizations, prenuptial agreements, and real estate.

He received academic honors at Columbia Law School as a James Kent Scholar and a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He was a faculty member at Columbia Law School for the academic year after his graduation. Following that, he joined the law firm headed by the former Comptroller of the City of New York, Joseph D. McGoldrick, which subsequently merged with the firm now known as Graubard & Miller.

He was a partner at the Graubard firm for many years, and headed its Trusts and Estates Department. Most recently, before joining McLaughlin & Stern, he was a partner of the firm now know as Dornbush Schaeffer Strongin & Venaglia. Mr. Shaw is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and has been an active participant in bar association activities, particularly with the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, where he has served (and is currently serving) on the Committee on Estate and Gift Taxation and the Committee on Trusts, Estates and Surrogates' Courts.

He also served as the Chair of the Section on Trusts, Estates and Exempt Organizations of the Association of the Bar's Committee on Lectures and Continuing Education, and, in that capacity, organized, chaired and participated as a panelist in numerous seminars and public programs on trust, estates, tax, and exempt-organization topics. Articles Mr. Shaw has written have been published in the New York Law Journal, the NYU Institute on Federal Taxation, and Trusts and Estates Magazine.

Mr. Shaw has provided expert opinions on matters related to trusts and estates in the courts in New Jersey and California. Mr. Shaw is a member and director of The Walter and Adi Blum Foundation, Inc., a private charitable foundation based in Palm Beach, Florida. He also has been a member of the Board of Overseers of the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and continues to be an active supporter of that museum.
