Firm principal Paul Kujawsky has thirty years of experience as an appellate attorney. He began his career as a staff attorney with the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, where he drafted scores of opinions for the court in all areas of civil and criminal law. From 1989 to 1994, he was employed by the firm of Wasserman, Comden and Casselman, in Tarzana, California. There, he drafted and reviewed discovery, performed legal research, prepared motions, and wrote appellate briefs and writ petitions for the firm’s complex insurance defense and government liability cases. In 1994, Mr. Kujawsky opened his own appellate law practice in Studio City, California. Since that time, he has focused exclusively in appellate practice, in all areas of civil and criminal law. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to use his expertise to help many clients and fellow attorneys through the appeals process. Mr. Kujawsky is proud to have written an amicus brief for members of Congress in Zivotofsky v. Clinton, 10-699. [An American citizen born in Jerusalem is entitled to have “Israel” listed as his birthplace in his passport. Congress shares foreign policy management with the President; the President can’t nullify Congressional legislation with a “signing statement.”] The brief helped persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to decide the important Constitutional questions in the case. Mr. Kujawsky received his Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Yale University. He was admitted to practice in the state of California in 1983. Mr. Kujawsky is an independent, creative thinker who has exceptionalwriting skills.
Appellate courts play a critical role in the legal system, ensuring that the law is properly applied and that trial court errors are corrected. At the Law Office of Paul Kujawsky, I focus exclusively on handling appeals in state and federal higher courts in California. With over 40 years of experience, my practice is dedicated to providing effective appellate services. Depending on whether I represent the appellant or the respondent, I argue to correct trial court errors or defend the trial court’s decision. I am often consulted by attorneys at the trial level, so that I can help spot and preserve issues for appeal. Based in Los Angeles, I represent clients throughout California and the West, handling cases in the California Superior Court Appellate Division, the California Courts of Appeal, the Supreme Court of California, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (covering California, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
Providing dedicated support in a wide range of civil appeals
I bring the following strengths to every appellate case:
Ability to develop innovative arguments — I craft unique and compelling arguments tailored to the specific facts and legal context of each case.
Familiarity with applicable laws — With extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, I make sure that every appellate argument I make is well-grounded.
Fluency in appellate practice. An effective trial attorney does not necessarily have the skills and knowledge needed to be effective in the appellate courts. The wise litigant who must appeal, or oppose an appeal, will engage an attorney who practices exclusively in the appellate court system.
I take a hands-on approach to all cases and work on a fixed-fee basis to keep my clients’ costs affordable.
