Colorado native Randy Canney has devoted over three decades
defending the accused in cases ranging from misdemeanors and traffic cases to
serious felonies. After receiving his B.A.in English from Colorado College in
1984 and his J.D. from the University of Colorado in 1988 he proudly served as
a Deputy Colorado State Public Defender in the Montrose and Golden offices from
1988 until 1993.
Since
leaving the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office he has maintained a solo
criminal defense practice handling trials, appeals, and post-conviction
matters. Mr. Canney has been involved in several death penalty cases and in
2005, he was honored to receive the Jonathan Olom Award from the Colorado
Criminal Defense Bar for “remarkable personal sacrifice made without regard to
personal gain in the defense of the accused.”
Mr. Canney
is listed in Best Lawyers in America, maintains an “AV” rating by Martindale
Hubbell, which is the highest ethical and professional rating awarded by this
nationally recognized rating directory. In addition he has been selected as a
“Colorado Superlawyer” every year from 2007 until present and is admitted to
practice in the United States Supreme Court.
Widely
respected within the legal community he is often asked to serve as an expert witness
in post-conviction matters and as a consultant on other lawyers’ cases. He
frequently teaches and lectures on criminal defense topics at continuing legal
education courses. He has always been generous with his time to talk to and
encourage the next generation of up and coming lawyers and has served as a
mentor to many.
Outside of his practice Randy is a
devoted dog lover, avid fly fisherman and voracious reader. He is a nationally
ranked Chess Master and several time Colorado State Chess Champion. He has also
completed numerous Ironman competitions and various other ultra-marathon and
endurance events. He enjoyed over a decade of Pikes Peak Marathons in the
beautiful mountains he loves.
After
twenty four happy and successful years in Denver he has recently relocated his
solo practice to Salida. Although he continues to handle cases throughout
Colorado he primarily accepts cases in the South Central Rocky Mountains and
the San Luis Valley. Mr. Canney is available for complimentary consultations
and accepts most major credit cards.
