Biography

With an extensive 25-year career focused on litigating and arbitrating complex commercial disputes, Richard J. Mooney's skills lie notably in transnational matters. The geographic emphasis includes disputes in California and New York, supplemented by experience in Florida, Texas, several other U.S. states, and various international tribunals across Asia, Australia, and Europe.

Throughout his career, Richard has had the privilege of representing a diverse range of clients, from individuals with modest means to those with substantial wealth, as well as corporations of all sizes. While he has successfully advocated for numerous American clients in disputes with foreign adversaries, his true passion lies in skillfully navigating U.S. proceedings on behalf of foreign clients. This dedication has earned Richard the honor of representing individuals from over two dozen countries worldwide, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Jersey, Korea, Lebanon, Lichtenstein, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UAE, and Ukraine.

Richard's professional journey commenced in San Francisco, where he honed his skills at the esteemed international law firms Heller Ehrman and Latham & Watkins. Prior to that, he served as a clerk for Judge Amalya Kearse of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York, following the completion of his law degree with high honors from the University of Michigan and his undergraduate studies with honors at Harvard.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Richard has actively engaged in pro-bono activities, achieving a significant victory in the U.S. Court of Appeals by thwarting government efforts to weaken the renowned "dolphin-safe" standard for canned tuna.
