Fun Facts

Rick and his wife Joey have hosted three exchange students, two from Northern Italy and one from Germany. A few years ago, Joey discovered that she has several first cousins in France, a result of her grandfather’s army service during World War I. These connections have resulted in lively visits at various times with the cousins and the former exchange students, both here in Alabama and in Europe.

Rick served in the U.S. Navy during the Cold War aboard the USS Jack (SSN 605), a nuclear submarine. In 2024, Rick will be inducted into the Holland Club, which is limited to submarine veterans who have been qualified in submarines for more than 50 years. He is an aficionado of the Aubrey-Maturin novels by Patrick O’Brian, which paint a vivid picture of life in the British Navy during the Napoleonic wars. The movie, Master and Commander, was based on incidents depicted in some of these books.
