Biography

Sara Serag represents biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in intellectual property matters, with a focus on patent portfolio management, and patent prosecution. She counsels clients on IP strategy. Sara is trained as a pharmacist. She pursued her graduate studies through the American University in Cairo, where she did her master’s research in biotechnology at UT-Southwestern and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology at Harvard Medical School. Sara also has teaching experience as a lecturer of pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy, UW Madison.

Sara manages patent portfolios for life sciences companies, drafts patent applications and prosecutes patents before the USPTO. She conducts freedom-to-operate and landscape analyses, performs due diligence reviews, and prepares intellectual property opinions. Sara supports inventors to develop IP strategies and counsels on intellectual property issues aligned with their research and development programs.

Sara has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals including Cell, Cell Metabolism, and Genes and Development.

Representative Matters

• Sara has worked on a range of complex intellectual property and regulatory matters in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and health care sectors. Her experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications for biologics and immunotherapies, conducting freedom-to-operate and patentability analyses, and Hatch-Waxman litigation. She has also advised healthcare and life sciences companies on FDA regulatory and Antikickback Statute compliance, promotional and labeling issues. In addition, Sara has provided strategic counseling to early-stage biotech companies on IP portfolio development, licensing, and aligning regulatory and patent strategies to support commercialization.
