Skyler B. Hutto

Skyler Hutto was born and raised in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

While in law school, Skyler was recognized for his oral advocacy as well as his work on the Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality. In Indiana, he worked part-time for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and served as the vice president of Graduate Student Government.

Skyler began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge Perry M. Buckner in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, which encompasses the southernmost part of our state. He coordinated scheduling, drafting and legal research while assisting the presiding judge in both General Sessions and Common Pleas cases.

With Williams & Williams, Skyler has practiced in civil litigation, automobile collisions, trucking collisions, criminal defense, DUI defense, traffic violations, constitutional claims, false arrests and general litigation. Over the last several years, Skyler has been a part of noteworthy litigation regarding wrongful imprisonment, indefinite detention, false arrests and other unconstitutional government action. As part of his pro bono representation of South Carolina school districts, he has twice represented public schools in the State Supreme Court, helping to set important precedent protecting the integrity of the public school system.

He was recently recognized for some of his work on the South Carolina “Pro Bono Honor Roll” and was named to The State newspaper’s “20 Under 40.” Skyler also works as a legal studies professor at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. Skyler is a leader in the state's legal community and is proud to serve on the board of the South Carolina Association for Justice. Furthermore, he works as a part-time public defender, a position that has allowed him to try dozens of jury trials in Orangeburg alone. During this time, Skyler has served as the president of the Orangeburg County Bar and as a judge for mock trial competitions.

Outside of the legal world, Skyler has been a lifelong Scout and outdoorsman. He has received the Eagle Scout Award, Vigil Honor, Hornaday Award and Founders Award. Skyler served as the Lodge Chief for Muscogee Lodge and he is currently serving as a district chair for the Edisto District of the Indian Waters Council, which includes Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties.
