Steve has 20 years’ experience litigating in various district courts throughout the United States, including the “rocket dockets” in the Eastern District of Virginia and the Eastern District of Texas, Federal District Courts in California, and of course, the Federal District Courts in Georgia. Steve has also litigated before the Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C., and has briefed and argued appeals before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Steve currently is the head of the Firm’s litigation practice group, has achieved an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, and is repeatedly recognized as a Top Rated Attorney in Georgia for Intellectual Property Law. Steve also has testified at trial as an expert on patent law.

Steve’s patent practice experience also includes interference practice and reexamination practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office, before which Steve is registered to practice. Steve also counsels clients and renders opinions concerning the infringement/non-infringement of patents, the validity/invalidity of patents, and the design of products and processes to avoid potential patent infringement assertions. The technologies at issue in the patent matters in which Steve has been involved range from electrical/computer/Internet related inventions, mechanical inventions, chemical inventions, biotech inventions, and design patents.

Steve’s trademark experience includes litigation in Federal District Courts throughout the country, and opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Steve began his legal career as a law clerk in the Intellectual Property boutique law firm of Merchant & Gould in its Minneapolis, Minnesota office. Steve’s first associate position was in the Washington, D.C. Intellectual Property boutique law firm of Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox. Steve left Sterne, Kessler in 1992 to move to Atlanta and join the Intellectual Property boutique law firm of Hopkins & Thomas. In 1996, Steve formed the Intellectual Property boutique law firm of Thomas, Kayden, Horstemeyer & Risley. After nine years with Thomas, Kayden, Steve joined the national litigation firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi as a Partner in 2005. Steve joined Smith Risley Tempel Santos as a Partner in 2009. After seven years, Steve teamed with longtime friend Dan Kent to start Kent & Risley LLC.
