Thomas Metsky Kretchmar

Tom handles cases in all areas of family law, both inside and outside of the courtroom. While he believes that calculated aggressiveness is often essential to efficiently resolving family law disputes, a hallmark of Tom’s practice is his talent for identifying creative settlement solutions to issues that appear to be at an unsolvable impasse.

Prior to entering the field of family law, Tom practiced private equity and hedge fund law at Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP and Proskauer Rose LLP, and prior to his law career, he worked in finance and private clients asset management. This professional background provides him with a unique and powerful skill set for understanding and negotiating complex financial portfolios.

In connection with his work as a family law attorney, Tom has been featured in journalism and programming from The New York Times, Town & Country, New York Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, The Guardian, The New York Post, The Awl, Artnet, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and other publications and institutions. He has also served as a divorce law consultant to multiple television shows.

Tom received his law degree from Emory University School of Law, where he won the Henry Quilliam Prize for outstanding achievement in contracts and commercial law. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he won the Elizabeth F. Flower Prize for best undergraduate paper in philosophy and was the second-slowest member of the men’s cycling team.

Tom has served as a CLE lecturer for the New York State Bar Association’s Family Law Section, and is a member of its executive committee and co-chair of its social media committee.
