Biography

William E. Whitney is Of Counsel in the firm’s Santa Rosa Beach, Florida office. Bill was one of the four original founding partners of Dunlap & Shipman, PA. His primary practice areas included defense of medical malpractice, workers compensation and other injury claims, civil litigation matters including construction defect cases, as well as appellate practice, community association law, and residential real estate closings. Bill has continuously maintained an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell peer-review rating system since 1993.

Bill received his undergraduate degree in history cum laude in 1974 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He then attended Duke University School of Law and received his JD degree in 1977. He began his practice in Miami and was a special partner at Blackwell & Walker, PA. Bill then moved to Tallahassee in 1993, where he was a shareholder with the Pennington Law Firm. In 2004, Bill was a founding partner of Dunlap & Shipman, PA and practiced in the Tallahassee office until 2010. He then moved to the Santa Rosa Beach office, and after 40 years of law practice, he went to Of Counsel status in 2018.

Bill was active in the Kiwanis Clubs in Tallahassee and Santa Rosa Beach where he served as president for four years. For the past two election cycles (2020 and 2022), Bill worked as a precinct supervisor for his county’s supervisor of elections. He also served on the boards of directors for three homeowners associations he lived in over the years.

Since going Of Counsel, Bill has become an avid bicyclist and has completed numerous century and metric century rides. Bill’s interest in American history continues and he enjoys collecting Civil War and Second World War artwork and militaria. Bill’s favorite activity is spending time with his three grandsons.
