Indian Tribunals

Indian tribunal practice involves a distinct body of law that regulates the legal relationships between Indian tribes and federal, state and local government. Copeland Cook’s Indian tribunal practice team appreciates the dynamic created by the tribal sovereignty which can have reaching effects on business developmental efforts and legal disputes within the tribe’s jurisdictional territory.

Tribal law derives from modern-day tribal constitutions and codes as well as in the traditions and customs as interpreted by tribal courts. There are 562 federally recognized tribes across the nation, but only one federally recognized tribe in the State of Mississippi, The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Copeland Cook’s Indian tribunal practice attorneys are admitted to practice in the Choctaw Tribal Court and have an understanding of the Tribe’s constitution, bylaws and tribal code. Our attorneys have defended a broad range of premises liability actions in the Choctaw Tribal Court.
