Operating Under the Influence

State and local law enforcement authorities utilize significant resources to enforce the laws in the state of Connecticut concerning the operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The penalties for convictions for operating under the influence are very harsh and significantly worse for repeat offenders, in some cases providing for lengthy mandatory jail terms. Experienced counsel versed in the latest developments in this ever-changing area of the law can provide great assistance in navigating these cases through the court system.

In addition, most people charged with operating under the influence (DWI or OUI) face a mandatory driver’s license suspension, even as a first offender. Furthermore, if you hold a commercial driver’s license, the penalties for loss of license can be significantly enhanced. Each person charged is afforded a hearing before the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the length of the suspension can vary depending upon a multitude of factors. Our practice group has enjoyed great success in contesting, and in many cases overturning, the Department of Motor Vehicles’ initial decision to suspend one’s operating privileges. We have litigated hundreds of operating under the influence cases very successfully, and we remain up-to-date on the latest developments in the law to effectively defend our clients.
