Sustainability

Sustainability is critical to ensuring the security of future generations and the growth of the world economy. The market is responding to calls for environmental stewardship, and companies are developing solutions to the new challenges. Our clients are leading the way. In response to the sustainability movement, Taft created a Sustainability Initiative Team to counsel clients in this growing area.

Taft’s Sustainability practice combines the best of Taft’s extensive experience in established practice areas in the emerging sustainability law field. Our practice assembles an experienced team to advise clients on all aspects of today’s green business culture, including the business opportunities and changes affecting how companies operate in this new area. Increasingly, utilization of sustainable practices has become a significant way to attract customers and grow revenues — while maintaining the integrity of the environment.

By understanding our clients’ businesses and objectives, offering practical solutions and quickly responding to emerging concerns, we have developed an exceptional perspective and the ability to help clients navigate the evolving gamut of green issues. We also understand that many green issues reach beyond the well-defined boundaries of green law. Because of the diverse nature of our firm’s experience, we are able to identify the issue and assign the appropriate attorney to tackle the issue, using cost-effective measures.

We counsel clients in acquisitions, divestitures, zoning, siting requirements and procedures, utility regulatory issues, tax matters, environmental reviews and compliance, design and construction, and contractual matters. Taft works with some of the most experienced sustainability consultants in the world, covering architecture, engineering, construction, software management and environmental disciplines. Our attorneys have appeared before regulatory agencies and planning commissions across the United States.

Taft’s Sustainability practice includes attorneys who have developed focused, in-depth knowledge of a variety of environmental concerns, including alternative energy, green practices and sustainability, clean air and clean water regulation, natural resources law, toxic tort litigation, environmental insurance coverage and claims, and a wide variety of related subjects. Our clients have come to us both with transactions and litigation assignments and have found a team of lawyers who are alert to the latest developments in the field and have employed cutting-edge techniques to obtain the best possible outcomes.

Our work has focused on green matters relating to the following:

  • Sustainable design and engineering.
  • Renewable energy.
  • State EPA and DOE permit litigation cases.
  • Gas recapture issues.
  • Plans to convert landfills and contaminated properties to usable recreational and conservation space.
  • Constitutional challenges to waste taxes.
  • Green issues in the public health context.
  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building certification.
  • Green building.
  • Government relations and public policy formation.
  • Litigation relating to green practices.
  • Regulatory compliance.

Diversity

embracing the benefits of many perspectives.

At Taft, we are committed to creating an inclusive culture of individuals from diverse backgrounds.  This commitment allows us to fulfill our primary mission—serving our clients to the highest standards of professional excellence.  But a diverse culture benefits our professionals as well:  it fosters teamwork and opportunities for professional growth and personal satisfaction.

Taft gives fair and equal treatment to all employees and applicants for employment regardless of race, gender, color, ancestry, religion or creed, age, national origin, disability, marital or civil union status, familial status, veteran status, or sexual orientation.  More than that, Taft actively seeks to hire and promote diverse, talented professionals.

The following examples highlight Taft’s efforts to foster diversity in the firm:

  • Recruitment.  Taft participates in and sponsors internships and clerkships that provide substantive legal experience to women, law students of color and law students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.  Taft actively recruits these individuals by working collaboratively with student organizations and attending job fairs, conferences and workshops.
  • Retention.  Retention of our attorneys is a key element of the firm’s long-term success.  We nurture well-rounded professionals from a variety of backgrounds through mentoring, training and professional development programs.  Beyond just retaining valued members of our team, we seek to provide them with the skills to enable them to continue to grow as attorneys.
  • Work and life balance.  Taft recognizes that a healthy balance between a professional's work and private life is essential to lasting success, for both the individual and the firm.  Taft offers alternative work-scheduling programs, remote access, flexible hours and countless opportunities for meaningful community involvement both within and outside of Taft.
  • Promotion and leadership.  Taft is proud that 60% of its new partners in the last four years were women.  Diverse professionals  also are involved in firm leadership and actively participate in recruiting and mentoring.

These examples provide a clear perspective on Taft’s commitment to its diversity mission.  And while Taft has made great strides in improving its diversity, we constantly strive to find new and better ways to promote diversity as a meaningful part of the way we do business.
