Government Relations

Williams Mullen’s Government Group represents businesses, associations and individuals in government-related actions at the federal, state and local levels. Our team of attorneys and legislative professionals has decades of experience working with the executive and legislative branches of state and local government, years in which we have cultivated priceless relationships with statewide and local elected officials, legislators, agency heads, key staff, and interest groups. Access, experience and expertise are at the core of our service, but the true value of our partnership with clients comes from our ability to offer innovative and entrepreneurial strategic solutions that expand our clients’ commercial footprint. We distinguish ourselves by understanding our clients' businesses, so that we may work together to proactively utilize opportunities, rather than only reacting to developments.

Our team has extensive experience actively counseling and advocating for clients on issues before the Virginia and North Carolina General Assemblies. We are proud to have been involved in most of the major public policy developments in Virginia and North Carolina. Our advocacy continues throughout the year and includes coordinating grassroots lobbying efforts, providing political advice and building client relationships with pivotal members of the legislature. In addition, the Group regularly advocates for our clients before agencies of federal, state and local governments.

The team’s strength comes from the distinct experience of our attorneys and professionals, including a 16-year veteran of the Virginia House of Delegates; a lobbyist representing clients before the Virginia General Assembly for more than 30 years; a former member of the North Carolina House of Representatives; a former secretary of administration in a governor’s cabinet; a former general counsel for the State Corporation Commission; a former attorney general; and a former chief counsel to the attorney general.

As veterans of the legislative and political process, our team has unique insight and understanding into the workings of a Governor’s office, an Attorney General’s office and state legislatures. Williams Mullen has the connections and experience to assists clients in any state where they may have an issue. We work with our clients to identify the best approach to address their distinct issues and then prepare a detailed strategy. If necessary, we also help them recruit local professional assistance for the project in the targeted or affected state.
