Construction Law

Womble Carlyle's construction law practice is composed of lawyers who understand the construction industry. We help our clients negotiate design and construction contracts, and assist them in managing the risks inherent in the construction process. We bring a keen understanding of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) techniques to client issues. Our lawyers are accomplished negotiators who have successfully resolved complex and contentious matters on behalf of clients. We employ common sense and practical solutions to get difficult and potentially costly disputes put to rest. Able to quickly focus on key issues, we address these issues through negotiation and mediation and, if necessary, arbitration or litigation. Visit us.

Diversity

In principle and in practice, Womble Carlyle values and seeks diversity. One of the core values of the Firm is respect for the dignity of the individual, which inherently embraces the differences among us. We believe that diversity strengthens the Firm and enables us to better respond to client needs. We have incorporated this perspective into our strategic planning and instituted an aggressive internal program to increase our diversity to more closely reflect that of the communities and clients we serve.

The Firm has demonstrated its commitment to diversity in many ways, including: (1) multifaceted recruiting and community programs to increase diversity throughout the Firm; (2) internal programs to explore the experiences, development, and progression of diverse attorneys to assist in their recruitment and retention; and (3) fostering an office environment that encourages tolerance and respect for individuals regardless of differences. Examples of specific efforts to employ and retain diverse attorneys include:

  • hiring a Director of Diversity & Workplace Initiatives to work with the established Diversity Committee comprised of minority and non-minority Associates and Members to address minority and female recruiting, retention, and advancement issues;
  • offering domestic partner benefits;
  • launching the Womble Carlyle Minority Scholarship for rising second-year law students at ten law schools in the states in which the Firm has an office: Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, Duke University, George Washington University, Howard University, Emory University, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina and the University of Virginia. Scholarship recipients will receive $4,000 during their second year as well as an offer of employment during the summer after their second year of law school. The scholarships are renewable for the third year of law school, at the Firm's discretion based on academic performance and other factors;
  • recruiting at law schools with large minority enrollments;
  • sponsoring events in conjunction with diverse student organizations at neighboring law schools;
  • recruiting at local and regional minority job fairs; and
  • considering contributions to the Firm's Diversity Initiative in compensation, bonus and advancement decisions.

As an adjunct to these in-house diversity initiatives, the Firm also formed a strategic alliance with the female-owned, African-American law firm Molden Holley Fergusson Thompson and Heard, LLC in Atlanta.
