For more than 25 years, lawyers at the Law Office of Mark P. Scherzer have advocated on behalf of consumers, policyholders, and employees to secure their rights to health insurance, life insurance, disability income insurance, business overhead expense insurance, and long-term disability benefits. Many of our clients have illnesses or medical conditions that are serious, chronic, and which may lead to disability, such as multiple sclerosis, heart disease, depression, degenerative spine disease, cancer and HIV/AIDS.

As lawyers, we are dedicated to helping our clients obtain or keep appropriate coverage, navigate the transition from employment to disability (or from disability back to work). We advocate for them when insurance companies or employee benefit plans deny insurance claims by refusing to cover necessary treatments, denying disability claims, or terminating disability benefits. We have experience representing clients with a broad range of occupations (including physicians, truck drivers, office managers, stock brokers, film editors, attorneys, financial analysts, sales representatives, receptionists, computer and IT personnel, production managers, performing and visual artists and designers, and corporate executives) from a wide variety of employment settings.

Although not strictly lawyer work, we also represent and protect the common interests of our clients in a number of additional ways, by advocating with legislators and regulators for reforms in insurance law and policy; engaging in major test case litigation on behalf of public interest groups; and speaking at policy roundtables, bar training and education programs, and informational presentations to advocacy groups and their members - many of whom suffer from chronic illness and disability.

Our attorneys, Mark Scherzer and A. Christopher Wieber, graduated from prominent law schools and trained as lawyers at major law firms before devoting their professional lives to representing persons with chronic illness and disability in their effort to enforce their rights to insurance coverage and benefits. When direct advocacy with insurance companies and employee benefit plans has failed, we have prosecuted lawsuits on behalf of our clients in both state and federal court.

Our lawyers are based in New York City, but serve clients with life, health insurance and short and long term disability claims throughout New York State (including, for example, New York County, Bronx County, Kings County, Richmond County, Queens County, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Rockland County, Westchester County, Putnam County, Orange County, Sullivan County, Ulster County, Dutchess County, Delaware County, Greene County, Columbia County, Albany County, Rensselaer County, Clinton County, Jefferson County, Oneida County, Schenectady County, Otsego County, Saratoga County and St. Lawrence County).
