About this firm

I am a second-generation lawyer from a well-known family of successful lawyers and judges who have practiced law in Portland since the early 1900s. My father, Richard, has been a civil trial lawyer and jurist since 1958. His brother, Hon. George A. Van Hoomissen, is a retired Oregon Supreme Court Justice. His cousin, Hon. Gerald J. Van Hoomissen, is a retired Superior Court Judge, and his father, the late Joseph Van Hoomissen, also practiced in Portland. I strive to carry on my family's tradition of providing clients with the highest-quality legal services. I take pride in being available to my clients and getting good results.I am a 1979 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy where I was elected permanent class president and earned an astronautical engineering degree. I earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of San Francisco in 1983 and was admitted to practice in Oregon, Washington and Washington D.C. I served seven years in active duty in the U.S. Air Force, first as an astronautical engineer controlling orbiting DoD satellites, and then, after law school, as a Congressional liaison officer for the Air Staff at the Pentagon and as a White House Social Aide to President Reagan. I left active duty in 1986 to begin private practice in Portland. I continued reserve duty as the Staff Judge Advocate for the Headquarters of the Oregon Air National Guard in Salem and as an Air Force Academy admissions liaison officer for the Portland area. I retired in the grade of colonel after 30 years of total service. I am also an instrument-rated pilot and glider instructor, and I fly a Beechcraft Bonanza. I am married and have two children.

I am licensed in all Oregon and Washington courts. My general civil trial practice is very diverse. It includes Litigation, Insurance, Insurance Defense and Coverage, Aviation, Business, Commercial, Corporate, Contracts, Construction, Employment, Negligence, Personal Injury, Products Liability, Wrongful Death and Malpractice, Real Estate, Real Property, Divorce and Family Law, Estate Planning, Wills and Trusts, Probate and Military Law.

Please contact me. I look forward to helping you with your legal needs.
