About this firm

Nowlan Law LLP began in 1857 when John Winans, a young lawyer from New Jersey, moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, and opened a law office. Over the years, Winans held various influential positions, including mayor of Janesville, a member of the Wisconsin Assembly, and U.S. Congressman. In 1877, he was joined by Ogden Fethers, a former professor, and later, by Malcolm Jeffris, a local attorney.

These founding partners built a legacy that continues today. Nowlan Law LLP has been home to generations of attorneys dedicated to serving the people and businesses of Janesville and Rock County. The firm has been instrumental in the growth of local industries, including the creation of Samson Tractor Company (later General Motors) and Parker Pen Company. The firm remains a cornerstone of the community, upholding the tradition of service that began over 150 years ago.
