The present Firm was founded by Irvine C. Porter in 1931 as a full service corporate law firm. Over the years, the Firm has evolved into a small but effective litigation group emphasizing prompt service and rapid deployment of necessary resources to meet immediate needs of its large client base. The lead attorneys have a great deal of experience in acting as lead trial counsel as well as local and liaison counsel in both statewide and area wide trial litigation and appellate litigation.

The Firm has a long standing, well recognized reputation as being prominent in the field Public Entity Law having represented cities, counties, independent boards, public entity officers and officials and law enforcement for over sixty years. The Firm has handled precedent setting cases in all areas of zoning and land use planning, taxation and takings matters, constitutional torts (federal and state); official errors, omissions and misconduct; First Amendment; and employment discrimination, in all courts, state and federal, in the State of Alabama. The Firm has successfully briefed and argued appellate matters in these areas of the law in all state and federal appellate courts which have jurisdiction for cases in the state of Alabama.

The Firm practices extensively in the area of Workman's Compensation and has won numerous cases at the trial court and Supreme Court level. David Hassinger is considered an expert in this area, and he has lectured extensively on the subject.

Porter, Porter & Hassinger, offers its expertise in the areas of products liability defense of firearms manufacturers where its long standing relationships in the competitive shooting family, the manufacturing and the publication side of the firearms industry enables it to provide highly respected experts uniquely suited to the needs of a particular matter. The Firm has represented both self insured entities and insured entities.

The Firm has experience practicing before state administrative agencies and the former Interstate Commerce Commission with emphasis on motor carrier law.
