About this firm

Established in 1975, the Smithfield, North Carolina firm of Spence, Carter & Reed, P.A. has served the civil litigation needs of Johnston County and its surrounding areas for more than three decades. People have come to know us for our honest and straightforward manner, aggression in the courtroom and compassion for our clients and their families.

Ties to the community

Robert A. Spence, Jr. was born and raised in Johnston County, North Carolina. He understands its people and their needs, and he has spent the last three decades of his life gaining an intimate knowledge of the North Carolina court system. He has served as the town attorney for Pine Level (1972-2001), Smithfield (1996-) and Princeton (1995-).

A civil practice for all

As a general civil practice, we handle all types of cases - but more specifically, what we do is help people to solve problems and resolve conflicts. Human beings are social animals, needing to interact with one another. We will represent your interests in court, and we'll really get a sense of who you are as a person and what caused the issue in the first place. Only then can we provide truly effective counsel.

Experience matters

One of the most important assets a good attorney will have is courtroom-tested experience. When your finances, your family, your home and your future are on the line, you want someone who has been there before and knows the lay of the land.

Robert A. Spence is AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell® - the highest recognition possible in the legal industry - for his professionalism and ethics.

As of May 1, 2013, Attorney Tom Berkau will be joining the firm. With Tom on the team, we will have a combined 78 years' worth of experience. You can put it to use for your legal battle.

With our vast experience in civil litigation, you can rely on us to help resolve even the most complex of cases. We are able to handle more-advanced issues than many other firms because we won't shy away from the hard work and the long nights spent poring over documents, looking for inconsistencies and preparing ourselves to represent you to the best of our abilities
