About this firm

We believe you can't be on both sides of the fence. So you'll find us defending management rather than the union. And you'll often find us arguing the unpopular (albeit socially responsible) side of public issues.

Justice is our goal. Our loyalty to and from our clients speaks for itself. Some of our clients have been with us for more than a century. Other client relationships date back more than 50 years.

Nothing is as important as our heritage, and along the way, we've believed in giving something back to the profession and to the community. We do this through leadership and public service on boards and commissions, and through pro bono work for indigent clients. Our pro bono work involves everyone from senior partners to associates and has distinguished us in the past as Volunteer Law Firm of the Year.

Know that our type of litigation and counseling doesn't lend itself to provocative headlines or splashy advertising. We believe that if you provide good service the word will get around.

Westervelt, Johnson, Nicoll & Keller LLC's roots date back to the Civil War when the firm was founded by Alexander McCoy and John S. Stevens in 1865. While serving as leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, Alexander McCoy successfully sponsored the motion that the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, banning slavery, be ratified. His partner, John S. Stevens, was counsel for many prominent businesses and financial institutions in central Illinois.

Today, the oldest continuous law firm in Peoria is still committed to seeing that justice is done . . . and that the needs of commerce are served.
