About this firm

Whiteman Osterman & Hanna maintains a diverse practice, primarily devoted to legal matters relating to the intersection of the public and private sectors. Much of what the Firm does involves the representation of private entities that are regulated or otherwise profoundly affected by public policy and public bodies. We have developed practice groups concentrating in legal and regulatory issues relating to commercial real estate; corporate; corporate and professional immigration; education; energy and telecommunications; environmental; estate planning and administration; governmental relations; intellectual property; international trade and business; labor and employment; litigation; matrimonial and family law; real estate development, zoning and land use; tax; and technology.

The founders of Whiteman Osterman & Hanna include former Counsel to Governors Rockefeller and Wilson, former Director, Assistant Director and Counsel to the Governor's Office of Employee Relations and former General Counsel and Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Since its founding in 1975, the Firm has grown from four attorneys to over ninety.

The Firm has continued to attract lawyers with unique public and private sector experience, many of whom are recognized as leading practitioners in their areas of concentration. Members of the Firm have served as Counsel or Assistant Counsel to four Governors of the State of New York. The Firm's depth of experience in governmental service is unparalleled in the region.

Whiteman Osterman & Hanna's clients include large and small industrial and commercial enterprises, not-for-profit corporations, state agencies, public interest groups, public officials and other individuals, and New York State local government and public benefit corporations. The Firm's areas of concentration and expertise enable it to serve clients with the effectiveness of larger firms, yet provide the individual attention needed to serve the clients' interests properly. The Firm has the resources and staff to manage large and complex litigation matters while still placing direct responsibility for a client's representation with a single designated attorney. A member of the Firm assumes overall responsibility for each client's matters, offering a clearly designated contact person and ensuring no duplication of effort at the client's expense.
