D. Reed Scism now serves of counsel (retired) in the Labor and Employment Law Department of Barnes & Thornburg LLP's Indianapolis, Indiana office. Throughout his professional career, he has devoted his practice almost entirely to the representation of employers in labor relations and employment law matters, including OSHA matters.
Mr. Scism's experience in union-related matters, including collective bargaining, arbitration, union avoidance, and unfair labor practice representation, is extensive, and since the early 1970s he has spent a large part of his time representing employers in employment discrimination matters both in federal and state court and before administrative agencies.
Mr. Scism is a consultant to the Indiana Personnel Association and has worked with the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging for many years. He has been a frequent speaker to employer groups of all kinds on employment law topics.
Mr. Scism graduated with distinction from DePauw University in 1958 and received his J.D. degree with distinction in 1965 from the Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington, where he was editor-in-chief of the Indiana Law Journal. He is a member of the Indiana State and Indianapolis Bar Associations and of the American Bar Association and its Labor and Employment Law Section (Equal Employment Opportunity Subcommittee) and Litigation Section. Mr. Scism is admitted to practice in the state of Indiana, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the Seventh Circuit Court and before the United States Supreme Court.
