Alarming decline in whale and dolphin species in the Gulf of California. The Gulf of California, renowned for its rich biodiversity, is facing a worrying decline in whale and dolphin species. Recent research indicates that thirteen species, including crabs, fish, birds, and marine mammals, show signs of advanced decline. This decline is attributed to factors such as abnormal warming of the waters, which alters the abundance and composition of plankton, the base of the marine food chain. Furthermore, the Gulf is home to 39% of the world's marine mammals and more than 900 species of fish, making it a vital ecosystem. However, threats such as illegal fishing, the use of gillnets, and industrial projects jeopardize its ecological balance.
