Biography

I love the challenge of the practice of the science, the medicine, as well as the legal aspect. I find it intellectually challenging to go from one day, focusing on neurosurgical issues, to the next day, doing something totally different. I also think it’s really important to represent healthcare professionals. They need our help, especially in these times.

Senior Trial Partner Charles Schechter is an aggressive, adaptable professional who doesn’t mince words. If you ask about his approach to the law or a specific case, he says simply: “I approach to win.” Constantly thinking outside the box, Charles thrives on the unique issues attending the cases he encounters, shunning a cookie-cutter approach to legal analysis and focusing instead on crafting narrowly tailored defense strategies for every client he represents.

Charles is visibly energized by the challenges involved in his day to day work- not only regarding law, but the associated science and medicine as well. Dealing with the diversity of neurosurgical issues one day, obstetrics the next, and something completely different after that is a source of personal satisfaction and intellectual fulfillment. Bolstering his keen legal skills, Charles has been blessed with a near photographic memory. This gift allows him to recall critical information on the spot, without notes; an invaluable asset in the courtroom.

Charles’ practice focuses on the vigorous defense of civil actions, including medical and dental malpractice claims and various insurance matters. He has extensive experience defending health care organizations and providers against a wide variety of claims and allegations. His 27+ years of experience include:

Defending major teaching hospitals, physicians, surgeons, nursing homes, physician and dental practice groups, and other medical professionals against malpractice allegations.

Litigating cases involving nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, both through insurers and on a self-insured basis.

Defending nursing homes and other assisted living facilities in cases involving pressure ulcers, resident falls, alleged negligence and abuse, medication errors, alleged assaults upon residents, and nutrition and hydration issues.

Representing physicians in Office of Professional Discipline and Office of Professional Medical Conduct proceedings.

Charles is a member of the Firm’s Nursing Home Defense Practice Group. He is also a frequent lecturer and invited speaker in client seminars dealing with reducing liability in obstetrical/gynecological malpractice matters. He has authored articles for Firm publications and MD News, and he has been a frequent guest commentator on television. Charles was selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America for Medical Malpractice Law - Defendants, and is rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, their highest rating.
