Biography

Gary Ashmore – Founder & Managing Attorney, The Ashmore Law Firm, P.C., Dallas, TX

Gary Ashmore is the Managing Attorney of The Ashmore Law Firm, where he oversees firm operations and leads the Family Law practice with a primary focus on complex and high-net-worth divorce. Recognized by Super Lawyers in Family Law (2024–2026) and licensed in Texas since 1995, Gary represents executives, business owners, and high-asset individuals in cases involving substantial estates, closely held business interests, and sophisticated financial structures. His cases regularly involve closely held companies and professional practices, executive and deferred compensation, stock options and restricted equity, trusts and inherited wealth, and separate-property characterization disputes.

Gary's history with the firm predates his law license: he helped his father, the late Joseph E. Ashmore, Jr. — who served 12 years as a Dallas County Probate Judge — build the firm at its founding in 1987, and joined its ranks as an attorney after earning his law degree. Nearly four decades later, he leads the practice his father started. His background in business litigation, real estate, and fiduciary matters means that when a divorce turns on a company valuation, a trust, or inherited wealth, he already speaks the language — the hardest questions in a high-asset divorce are often about the business or the estate, not the divorce itself, and Gary handles them within the representation rather than across two firms.

Born and raised in Dallas, Gary attended Jesuit College Preparatory School before earning his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and his law degree from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law (now Texas A&M University School of Law). He brings deep local knowledge combined with decades of complex case experience.

Gary is known for his strategic, straightforward approach. He believes clients should choose an attorney the same way they choose a trusted physician — someone who provides clear guidance, explains risks and financial exposure upfront, and develops a plan tailored to the client's specific goals. His focus is on efficient, results-driven representation in high-stakes matters where discretion, precision, and long-term outcomes are critical.

When cases can't settle, Gary tries them: he has taken family law matters to both Texas juries and bench trials — a distinction that matters in Texas, one of the few states where custody and certain divorce issues can be decided by a jury. For clients who need resolution without a public courtroom, he and his team also handle matters through private judge proceedings and structured negotiation. The result is representation built around the right path for the case, not the only path the lawyer knows.

Gary regularly accepts referrals from attorneys whose clients face divorces beyond their practice's scope — matters involving business valuations, professional practices, executive compensation, complex separate-property tracing, or estates entangled with the marital estate, including matters headed to trial. Referring counsel can expect responsive communication and a client experience that reflects well on the referral.

Gary has contributed extensively to the legal community, authoring and co-authoring multiple publications and presenting on topics including post-decree considerations, the intersection of family and estate issues in divorce, and collaborative approaches in complex cases. He has discussed legal issues on local and national broadcast media, including NBC News.
