Professional Liability

For more than forty years, Shibley Righton LLP has been in the forefront of professional liability defence.

One of our client's once said the lawyers at Shibley Righton LLP are "pound for pound the best defenders against professional liability claims in the country". While we might quibble about his words, there is little doubt that many professionals - accountants, architects and lawyers - would agree with that assessment.

Our large professional liability practice group is characterized by a practical view of the realities within which professionals work today. Time pressures are more intense. Complexities in their subject matter have multiplied. Government regulation has added further considerations in almost everything they do.

So, yes, sometimes professionals make mistakes, and their clients sometimes have legitimate claims. But they also sometimes face groundless claims - clients who blame their professional advisors for their own failings, or the inevitable consequences of business or personal risks they have willingly taken.

Our job is to understand these realities and resolve claims against professionals fairly and efficiently. In many cases it means fighting tooth and nail on behalf of the defendant professionals. In other cases, it means working with those professionals to minimize the damages.

We also regularly accept the role as speakers or teachers, assisting professional groups and students in understanding the malpractice rules, and the professional ethics, associated with their particular profession.
