Municipal Law

Attorneys who practice municipal law represent towns, cities, counties, states and the federal government--as well as individual government agencies--on issues related to municipal operations. In some instances, municipal lawyers may serve as outside general counsel to an town or agency. Law firms that practice municipal law may advise their clients on financing issues such as municipal bonds, tax increment financing districts, tax levies and debt financing; real estate issues including zoning issues, the purchase or sale of real estate, and acquisition of property by eminent domain; labor and employment issues, including police and fire department disciplinary issues; election law; "sunshine" laws; and board operations.
