Our firm also provides representation at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide and practices before the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and numerous federal and state courts around the nation.

The firm's extensive experience has established it as an indispensible resource in the immigration field, with many clients coming to BMK LLP by referral. Our clientele ranges from major corporations to internationally acclaimed performance artists and has included manufacturers, retailers, pharmaceutical companies, hoteliers, modeling agencies and technology companies. BMK LLP's prominent reputation is balanced by a decidedly personalized approach each New York immigration attorney has to client service. Our NY immigration lawyers average 20 years of legal experience, and each is dedicated to providing every client with representation that is tailored to his or her particular needs. This tradition of excellence is rooted in the work of our founders, who pioneered the practice of immigration law and established BMK LLP as a leader in the field more than 80 years ago:

Haskell R. Barst (1907-1990)

Haskell R. Barst was the founding partner of Barst & Mukamal LLP and one of the first attorneys in the United States to focus his practice exclusively on immigration law. During an era in which U.S. immigration law and policy were predominantly exclusionary, Mr. Barst dedicated his work to seeking an end to the severe restrictions placed on people of certain national origins or ethnicities. By cultivating a renowned practice and a distinguished legal reputation, Mr. Barst helped establish immigration law as a respected area of legal practice that endures today.

Steven S. Mukamal (retired)

Steven S. Mukamal joined forces with Haskell Barst in the late 1960s to create Barst & Mukamal LLP. Mr. Mukamal was an LL.B. and J.D. graduate from Brooklyn Law School in 1965 and served as National Treasurer, Second Vice President, First Vice President, and National President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) from 1973 to 1979. One of the nation's most prominent immigration law attorneys and a devoted public servant, Mr. Mukamal received many honors and achievements over his long career. In 1982, he received the National Humanitarian Award from the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education; in 1988, he was awarded the Man of Achievement Award by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England.
