Lokey, Mobley and Doyle, LLP is a successor firm to Lokey and Bowden, a partnership sealed by a handshake in 1939 by Hamilton Lokey and Henry Bowden. Charles Lokey, Hamilton's brother, began working for Lokey and Bowden in 1946.
Hamilton Lokey, a graduate of the University of Georgia, was a trial lawyer whose notable cases included the defense of lawsuits arising from the 1946 Winecoff Hotel fire, which resulted in 119 deaths and was the worst hotel fire in United States history. Hamilton Lokey served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1953-1956. In his latter years, Hamilton Lokey climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji, and Mount Rainier. He also hang-glided on his 75th birthday and parachuted on his 80th birthday. Hamilton Lokey retired in 1995 from Lokey and Bowden. Hamilton Lokey died in 1996.
Henry Bowden was Atlanta city attorney from 1963-1976, in addition to his trusts and estates practice at Lokey and Bowden. Henry Bowden was chairman of the board of trustees of Emory University from 1957 until 1979. He was a former president of the Atlanta and Georgia Bar Association. In 1995, upon the retirement of Hamilton Lokey, Mr. Bowden became of counsel to the Bowden Law Firm, a trusts and estates practice started by his son, Henry Bowden, Jr. Henry Bowden died in 1996.
In 1995, Lokey and Bowden lawyers Charles Lokey, Malcolm Smith, Totsy Nichols, and Mel Mobley formed Lokey and Smith. Shortly thereafter, Kevin Doyle joined the firm. In January of 2005, Malcolm Smith retired and the firm's name was changed to Lokey, Mobley and Doyle, LLP. The firm continues to specialize in civil litigation and appellate work, with an emphasis in areas of personal injury, insurance, employment law, products liability, and False Claims Act - Qui Tam claims.
