Paternity

Paternity establishes a legal relationship between a child and his or her father. In many states, a man is automatically assumed to be the father of a child that is born to his wife. Unmarried couples, however, may have to take additional steps for a father to be recognized, in the eyes of the law, as a child's parent. (This is often done through a legal form called a "voluntary acknowledgement of paternity.") In other instances, a court may order a father to under paternity testing, usually though a DNA sample, before the court can create child support orders, or approve a child custody and visitation agreement. Fathers who are seeking to establish paternity should work with a family law attorney who has experience with paternity issues. A mother who want to receive child support should also work with a lawyer to establish court-recognized paternity of her child.
