Wrongful Termination

In the United States, most workers are considered "at-will employees," meaning the employer may terminate the worker at any time for almost any reason and the worker is also free to quit. There are, however, a few instances when it is unlawful for a company to lay off or fire a worker. These situations--known as wrongful terminations or wrongful dismissals--include terminations for discriminatory reasons, as well as terminations in violation of employment contracts or union collective bargaining agreements. Depending on state laws, there may be other situations where an employer cannot terminate a worker.
